The panel, announced by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Monday, comprises Justice Subhash Reddy and Justice MR Shah.

The decision came exactly seven years after the brutal gang rape of a physiotherapy intern which shook Delhi and brought back the issue of women’s security into the spotlight. It also comes in the wake of a spike in rape cases across the country and the recent incident of encounter killing of four accused in the gang rape and murder of a veterinarian in Telangana.

Justice Bobde last week ordered setting up of a three-member panel to probe the extra-judicial killing of the four accused and ordered completion of the probe in three months.

On Monday, a Delhi court convicted BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar for the sexual assault of woman in Unnao two years ago.

The slow pace at which criminal trials are being conducted in rape cases has triggered widespread criticism and led to the setting up of the two-judge panel.

The Chief Justice held extensive meetings and consultations with other senior judges before taking the decision, according to people aware of the developments.

The statistics of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) highlights the poor law and order situation in the country with 3.59 lakh cases of crime reported against women in 2017. Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of crimes against women with 56,011 cases in 2017, while Madhya Pradesh registered the highest number of rape cases at 5562. (Source: Livemint)
